The Vashon Green School is a place-based multi-age learning community located on 7 acres of farm and woodlands, on Vashon’s Westside. We offer a hands-on, hearts-on embodied curriculum rooted in practices that promote social intelligence and connection to the natural world. Our curriculum seeks to provide children with tools and support for living a full, balanced and creative life by giving equal value to each of the four windows of knowing: feeling, imagining, sensing and thinking. Mentors honor each child’s unique gifts and learning styles, supported by our small mentor-student ratio. VGS children, mentors and families journey together to create a learning community rooted in compassion, connection and gratitude.

This week’s afternoon activity: Nettle Vinegar

This week, for afternoon activity, we are going to make nettle vinegar together. You don’t have to do this activity today. But if it rains this afternoon and you didn’t want to sit spot in the rain you could make vinegar! Or you could make it tomorrow, Tuesday, after you listen to the main lesson story. Or you could make nettle vinegar on Wednesday or Thursday. Are you scheduled for class with Amy on Monday or Wednesday? Do you have Spanish with Lucia on Tuesday or Thursday?

3/19/20 Thursday: First day of spring and lessons from Amy Mercer

Britt Freda

Hi Everyone,

Today is the first day of Spring! Today go outside and count how many things you can find that are signs of spring. Can you find bright green Indian plum? Do you see nettles? What colors are they? Are there blossoms on trees near you? Are there flowers poking up from their sleepy soil beds?

Parents check your email for individualized reading and writing lessons for your student(s) from Amy .

love,
VGS

today’s title page for our main lesson

Hello VGS Families,

Welcome to online learning at Vashon Green School.  The audio is the story of the week.  It’s about 13-14 minutes long.  Since we are beginning a new lesson theme the students will need to  create the title page for the theme.  They can do it on their next blank page in their lesson book.  If they want to draw first please remind them to skip a page for the title and they can go back and do it later.   We count the letters in each line of the tile page including spaces and divide in half in an attempt to center each line / word.  Working math into art is a coyote trick. Legiblity and large format is encouraged always.  They will be able to go back later and add imagery to the page as more stories fill out the unit. I encourage listening to the story with no screen visible.  Radio style.

Drawing the image can be done as a double spread ( they know what that means)  The summary can be written opposite the title page.  I will post a short summary later for writing which they can do today or  tomorrow.  Older kids do their own longer retelling . It should be a couple paragraphs at least.

Love to All
